Workshop the British Psychological Society: Understanding CPTSD in the ICD-11

Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) has become part of common clinical language when referring to those individuals who have experienced prolonged and repetitive traumas interpersonal in nature. Coined originally in 1992 by Judith Herman this term has come to represent a disorder which, until June 2018, had no official recognition in the major diagnostic frameworks. With the publication of the new ICD-11, CPTSD is now a distinct diagnostic entity, and its use governed by the ICD-11 diagnostic criteria.
An early understanding of this new diagnostic entry is essential for those working with complex posttraumatic stress disorder. A comprehensive appreciation of the foundations of the new ICD-11 CPTSD model and the validity of the construct is needed to facilitate effective use and meaningful interpretations of any CPTSD diagnosis. The theoretical contributions to this new diagnostic model and the context in which it sits provides a vital part of understanding the risk factors, history and features associated with those most likely to qualify for diagnosis. The emerging implications for practice indicate particular considerations need to be undertaken in relation to assessment and treatment and in order to successfully differentiate individuals with CPTSD.
This event aims to quip individuals working in the field with this knowledge and understanding and is therefore suitable for a wide range of practitioners in contact with a CPTSD population. It is envisaged it will be of use to psychologists, psychotherapists, service managers, community psychiatric workers, metal health and well-being practitioners, and others engaged in clinical and therapeutic work with those affected by CPTSD.
By the end of the day delegates will be able to:
- Understand the structure and content of the ICD-11 diagnostic categories of PTSD & CPTSD and its position in relation to the DSM-5.
- Evaluate the evidence relating to the validity of the ICD-11 CPTSD construct and symptom structure.
- Understand the evidence on prevalence, comorbidity and risk factors found with CPTSD under the ICD-11 structure.
- Be aware of the emerging implications for practice, particularly in relation to assessment and treatment of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder under the ICD-11 model, and how this relates to their own work contexts
